Engagement Session Guide

Everything You Need to Know Before Your Engagement Photos

The Complete Engagement Session Guide

Planning your engagement session is one of the most exciting parts of your wedding journey. It's an opportunity to celebrate this chapter of your lives while creating beautiful images you'll use for save-the-dates, wedding websites, invitations, and memories that last long after the wedding day.

An engagement session is also a chance for us to get to know each other before the wedding. You'll become comfortable in front of the camera, learn how I guide couples naturally, and feel much more relaxed when your wedding day arrives.

Whether you're planning your engagement photos in New York City, Long Island, or beyond, this guide will help you prepare for a fun and stress-free experience.

Why Schedule an Engagement Session?

Many couples wonder if an engagement session is really necessary. While it's optional, there are several reasons why I highly recommend it.

Get Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Very few couples have professional photos taken regularly. Your engagement session gives you time to relax, understand how I work, and discover that you don't need to know how to pose perfectly.

My approach focuses on natural movement, genuine interactions, and authentic moments rather than stiff poses.

Build Trust Before the Wedding

By the time your wedding day arrives, you'll already know what to expect.

Instead of meeting your photographer for the first time on one of the biggest days of your life, you'll feel like you're working with someone familiar.

Beautiful Photos Beyond the Wedding

Engagement photos are perfect for:

  • Save the Date cards

  • Wedding websites

  • Guest books

  • Reception décor

  • Social media announcements

  • Framed artwork for your home

Learn What Works Best

We'll discover:

  • your favorite angles

  • posing styles you enjoy

  • lighting preferences

  • how you naturally interact together

This helps create an even smoother wedding day experience.

When Should You Book an Engagement Session?

The ideal time is 6–12 months before your wedding.

This gives you plenty of time to use the photos for wedding planning while avoiding last-minute scheduling stress.

If you're planning Save the Dates, consider scheduling your engagement session 8–12 months before the wedding so you'll have your images ready.

Best Seasons

Spring

Fresh blooms and comfortable weather.

Summer

Long evenings and vibrant sunsets.

Fall

Beautiful foliage and warm colors.

Winter

Snowy city streets, holiday lights, and a cozy atmosphere.

Every season offers its own unique look.

How Long Does an Engagement Session Last?

Most engagement sessions last about one hour, which is enough time for:

  • One or two nearby locations

  • One outfit (or a quick change if planned)

  • 45–60 beautiful images

  • A relaxed pace without feeling rushed

If you're hoping to visit multiple neighborhoods or include several outfit changes, a longer session may be the better option.

What Should You Expect During Your Session?

One of the biggest concerns couples have is:

"We're awkward in front of the camera."

You're not alone.

Almost every couple says this before their session.

The good news is you don't need modeling experience.

Throughout the session, I'll guide you with simple prompts instead of rigid poses. We'll walk, talk, laugh, and enjoy the experience together.

The result is a collection of photographs that feel natural, emotional, and timeless.

My Photography Style

My approach combines:

  • Documentary storytelling

  • Editorial portraits

  • Natural candid moments

  • Classic timeless photography

The goal isn't to make you look posed.

It's to make you look like yourselves.

How to Prepare for Your Engagement Session

Choose Meaningful Locations

Think about places that reflect your relationship.

Popular choices include:

  • City streets

  • Waterfronts

  • Parks

  • Coffee shops

  • Museums

  • Neighborhoods you love

Plan Your Outfits

Choose clothing that feels comfortable and coordinated rather than identical.

Neutral colors and timeless styles photograph beautifully.

Avoid large logos or busy patterns that can distract from your connection.

Get Plenty of Rest

A good night's sleep makes a noticeable difference in how energetic and confident you feel.

Hair & Makeup

Many couples schedule a professional hair and makeup appointment before their engagement session. It's also a great opportunity to do a trial for your wedding day look.

Arrive Early

Give yourself extra travel time so you can begin the session feeling relaxed instead of rushed.

Bring Comfortable Shoes

Especially in NYC, we'll often walk between nearby locations. Comfortable shoes for walking—and dress shoes for photos—can make the experience much more enjoyable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if it rains?

We'll monitor the forecast together and reschedule if necessary.

Can we bring our dog?

Absolutely. Pets often make engagement sessions even more personal and memorable.

Can we change outfits?

Yes. Most couples bring one additional outfit if time allows.

Do you help with posing?

Definitely. I'll guide you naturally throughout the session so you never have to wonder what to do.

How many images will we receive?

Every session is carefully edited, and you'll receive a curated gallery of high-quality images ready to download, print, and share.

Ready to Plan Your Engagement Session?

Your engagement session should feel relaxed, enjoyable, and true to who you are as a couple. Whether you're envisioning sunrise at the Brooklyn Bridge, a quiet walk through Central Park, or golden hour along the Long Island waterfront, the goal is to create photographs that tell your story naturally.

If you're looking for engagement photography with a documentary and editorial approach that feels timeless rather than overly posed, I'd love to help you create images you'll treasure for years to come.
